,PKR believes Kuala Langat MP Dr Xavier Jayakumar was pressured to defect and support the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government. In a statement today, secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution Ismail (above) urged other party lawmakers to remain steadfast amidst challenges and temptations.“As someone who has known Xavier for a long time, his actions and the excuses in his statement today have raised all sorts of questions.“However, what distinguishes real reformists from the others is they can withstand tests in both good times and bad. “I repeat my call for all PKR MPs to remain steadfast in holding on to the principles and struggle of Reformasi, and not to succumb to the bait of rewards and threats,” he said. rrrrXavier announced his decision to quit PKR on social media this morning, citing “extreme frustration” and a need to ensure the government remains stable to avoid an election amidst the Covid-19 pandemic.The former minister said he was now an independent MP who supported Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin. The move came after his “family friend” was arrested by the MACC last month over investigations into a project in Perak that was initiated during the Pakatan Harapan administration. Saifuddin claimed that Xavier had been “targeted” and threatened before making the jump.“Xavier recently met with the PKR leadership and informed us that the MACC had made him the target of an investigation after the MACC arrested his political secretary, personal assistant and several of his acquaintances in relation to an ongoing case. “Xavier was later contacted by a senior minister who said he (Xavier) needed to support PN or face serious consequences,” he alleged.
