WITH a new digital library set up at MakerSpace in Balik Pulau, Penang, students there can now be better equipped to pick up digital skills.

The digital library, which is the first of its kind in Southwest District on Penang island, is aimed at cultivating digitalisation and coding knowledge among young people.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said after MakerSpace was established in 2019, the component was a feather in the cap for Penang Island City Council (MBPP) in its effort to encourage the use of technology among youths.

“Although we have always excelled in producing good results in the manufacturing and service sectors, the one concern that has often arisen among relevant authorities is the lack of talent to drive operations digitally.

“Hence, I strongly believe that with MBPP’s continuous efforts to promote digitalisation and coding which are considered key components in this era, more talents can be produced to support the state to further accelerate its economy in the future,” he said after launching the digital library at MakerSpace in Balik Pulau recently.

Chow added that MBPP had collaborated with Chief Minister Inc (CMI) to realise this initiative.A student showing a demonstration of work on a tech-based product. Looking on are Chow (left) and Bakthiar (right).

Meanwhile, MBPP mayor Datuk Yew Tung Seang said it was important that the young ones were equipped with industry- driven skills so that they could be fully prepared for the competitive workforce of the future.

“The new digital library will be a platform to nurture students living in Balik Pulau to immerse themselves in the use of technology.

“MBPP would like to thank important partners such as Malaysia Digital Economy Corp, Intel Technology Sdn Bhd, Penang Science Cluster, the Balik Pulau community and Politeknik Balik Pulau for showing great support throughout these years.

“Intel has so far contributed 80 laptops. As for this new set-up, CMI has agreed to pass 20 access cards to MakerSpace which can be used by interested students when they visit the library.

“The cards can be used by the students to access e-books made available on the Penang Digital Library website,” he said.

The digital library will be open from Monday to Friday, from 8am to 5pm.

Since MakerSpace was set up, it has attracted over 40,000 students from various schools in Penang.

Also present at the opening were Balik Pulau MP Datuk Muhammad Bakhtiar Wan Chik, Pulau Betong assemblyman Mohd Tuah Ismail, MBPP secretary Datuk Addnan Mohd Razali and Penang police chief Comm Datuk Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain.
