Tweet Facebook Mail Despite being racked with pain and unable to stand, Connie Johnson took her battle against cancer to the front line for another fight.Johnson, the sister of 2017 Gold Logie winner Samuel Johnson, and the mother of two young boys, recently pulled back from public life to spend more time with her family after she stopped her cancer treatments. But last week came a chance to tell her story to people who could potentially make a difference –some of whom may eventually help find a cure for this dreaded disease that affects so many Australian families. In a speech to about 1400 medical students at the University of Melbourne, Connie talked about the first time the disease struck when she was just 11-years-old, and then again when she was 22. Her final diagnosis came seven years ago when doctors gave her six months to survive.Connie gave the speech at the University of Melbourne last week. (Facebook)Samuel Johnson and Connie have raised money through their Love Your Sister campaign. (Facebook)Connie told the group that last prognosis frightened her the most, because of the fear she would die before her boys got to know her.Now Willoughby is ten and Hamilton is nine, and she knows they will have memories of her forever. One of the audience members told 9news.com.au the address was incredibly moving, with Connie describing the treatments she’s undergone, the dozens of drugs she has tried and the diagnosis that came too late to save her.RelatedNew gene therapy could help treat bowel cancer that reaches the liverUK woman accused of faking cancer to raise more than $81,000 from crowdfundingPaul 'Fatty' Vautin reveals skin cancer scareBut he said Connie’s overriding message was the need for more medical research into the progressions of this disease that will strike one in two Australians by the age of 85.Samuel, her devoted brother and key partner in the Love Your Sister campaign, recorded her speech and said he’ll share the video sometime in the future.Taking to Facebook once again to share his thoughts with the thousands of supporters of Love Your Sister, Samuel said the speech in Melbourne somehow brought down the weight of everything since Connie’s diagnosis.“All our time and all our spare time. All our industry. All our f----ups and all the lessons. All the love thrown around. All the cancer stories shared. All the media calls. All the kindness shown. All the structural village business, which cripples us on good days. All the campaigns that failed, and all of the precious few that flew. All of the coins banked. All of the selfies where we smile through our dirty laundry, because we know it's way bigger than us and no matter how empty our tanks are, we will ALWAYS smile, because life's too f------ short, and we will never EVER allow us to become just another hard-luck story. All the memories, the giggles, all the inevitable lows and insane highs.Connie Johnson and her brother Samuel. (Instagram)He said it all came to bear as he wheeled her off stage, and led him write the poignant note he posted on Instagram last week.”.. Thanks for showing me that life is what we make it to be. Thanks for teaching me that now can still be awesome, even when you've so nearly run out of now and have no more real awesome left. I wish I could soften your pain, or lessen your fear, or give you something tangible, but tangible clearly isn't in season. I'm proud to walk you to the hardest part of the road. The end. The only part of the road in your life that must sadly be travelled alone”To date , Love Your Sister has raised over $4-million dollars, about half coming from what Connie called her “last hurrah”. She asked people to send in 5 cent coins and ended up being inundated with silver coins of all varieties that they turned into a giant silver heart. If you would like to donate go to www.loveyoursister.org
